Back & Ready To Game, 20047
By witchlocke [Tue 12 May 2020 @ 8:38 PM (PBW Time)]

doubt there are any left that remember me, but I'm an OG from when PBW was first created and passed on from the original owner. I ran many games (mainly 2nd Ed AD&D) years ago, but haven't really been active on the site for about a decade.

Recently, PBW popped into my head and I started to remember all the fun times I had on this site. Between the games and being one of the original beta testers (when the idea first started up) I realized how much joy I had here.

I'm not sure if there are any still left from that period. I joined back in about 2001 or 2002, and drifted away in about 10 years later.

What I'm hoping to get is any members that can fill me in on what happened in the last ten years? What's going on lately with the site? And where can I be of any help and assistance?

I plan on starting a game (possible more after getting settled), but I'm not sure what is going on with the site. With tabletop games becoming so mainstream I would think the beloved PBW should see a boost in activity. We used to be a community of over a thousand members at one time.

What can I do to help. PBW is very dear to my heart. I'm completely in love with the fact that it's still around. And I can't wait to get my feet wet again. If I can help the website grow, I will. If I can merely be a content creator, I will.

Just direct me where to go and I will help. In the meantime, help me out with what's happened in the last ten years. (Especially, with the reaper. We all hate it, and it appears that the admins are looking to permanently reap the reaper! Lol)

Oh, and lastly, do we have a FB group going on? I haven't been able to find one. It would help with donations to at least pay for the maintenance of the site and pay for servers. I'm probably over stepping here, but I'm just stepping back into the world I was part of when i frequented and contributed heavily to our beloved

First and foremost, we do have a Facebook page:
It is not a "group" per se, but it is a simple FB hub for Playbyweb to have a reliable form of communication with users and fans of the site.

News-wise, there hasn't been a lot to report on:
  • There has been a transition of members who manage the site, including a new president.

  • The reaper has been disabled as its purpose now versus 20 years ago isn't like it was. The deleting of threads and boards is now manually at the discretion of the board's admin.

  • The mailer-daemon is currently not functional under the current configuration, so digest emails about posts are not currently taking place. This project requires a lot of time and while it is still on the docket, efforts are more focused on PBW 3.0 as a bigger plan for the future of PBW.

  • The Facebook page is run mostly as a medium to connect users to the admins and to provide some basic updates and reports about website outages.

  • Outages hit really hard through all of last year as botnets and malicious web attacks were on a rise. Each attack was shutdown after discovered and the website brought back online with the worst of them lasting a little over a week to resolve due to extra technical issues.
Our average downtime was thankfully only a few hours span thanks to the support of users reporting the outages.

  • Our admin team is working on a PBW v3.0 to help usher in a newer era of PBW that updates the view and the way the website works with modern browsers. This is still in early alpha development as all efforts are still on a volunteer base. If you're familiar with coding, there may be some assistance you could provide with development. Javascript is the coding of choice for the upcoming PBW 3.0. PHP 7.2 is the current version coding needs.

  • The biggest boost that can be done for PBW would simply be talking about it and sharing it with others. New members and returning members are welcome. Being that the website's operation has been and continues to be purely based on user donations, all advertisement is handled by word of mouth and the basic analytics that come with managing a page on Facebook.

I also joined PBW back in the early 2000s as well. While I never had a hiatus from it, I have seen it through its rougher patches and it always pleases me to see it going strong. Our users may have dwindled over the years, but it is still a source for entertainment and a great medium for storytelling. While the current site is not 100% mobile-friendly, we are still very much bandwidth-friendly for slower internet speeds or those on limited data budgets.

If you have any other questions, I can do my best to answer them.
