PBW Updates, 20003
By cartman2k [Sat 7 Dec 2019 @ 2:04 PM (PBW Time)]

To be transparent to all our dedicated users, we'd like to take the time to let you know about the ongoings behind the scenes.

  • First and foremost, we have been stricken with multiple waves and attempts targeting the website for malicious reasons. The result often is the dreaded HTTP 500 Server error (formerly the blank white page) when trying to access PBW. This has been a problem for some time now and we have been taking proactive measures to prevent it from causing downtime as offending IPs get blocked in response to the malicious behaviors. We are also considering a new host for the site along with this.

  • Secondly, we're reaching a crossroads for the future design of PlayByWeb. The long-standing current format everyone had grown accustomed to has become quite dated. Part of the coding efforts is not only to patch up the site as we know it but to also consider what PBW will become moving forward into the modern designs for websites. Volunteers are wanted for this, so if you have would like to participate in testing out PBW 3.0, please let us know here.

  • Thirdly, we'd like to clarify on some of the known issues. Namely, emailing and the reaper. At this time, we've decided to leave the reaper disabled. The original purpose of the reaper was to trim the site when storage space was much more of an issue. This has not been a concern in quite some time. As for the emailer system, a lot of changes may be necessary to get it working again as the code formats have been outdated. This is part of the coding effort.

While the reaper remains disabled, should you wish a thread deleted from a board, the board admin needs to only delete the first post that created the thread. After confirmation, the entire thread will be deleted.

  • Finally, we'd like to take the time to thank everyone once more. As all our support staff for the website is based on volunteer efforts and free time, we appreciate everyone's patience tremendously as life can and does often get in the way of PBW's progress. It is your dedication that inspires us to continue working towards a better PlayByWeb. None of this would be possible without your continued support. As PBW closes in on 20 years of providing an outlet source for creativity, entertainment, community, and critical hits, we look forward to keeping that going strong.
